Behaviour Based Safety In The Workplace

Originated from the work of H.W.Herinrich, it was concluded that roughly 90% of all incidents are caused by human error which is the foundation of Behaviour Based Safety (BBS). BBS also addresses additional reasons for injuries in the workplace such as environment, equipments, procedures and attitudes.

BBS is also about attitude adjustments to be sustaining. It has been proven that behaviour influences attitude and attitude influences behaviour. The goal should be small gains over and over again aiming for continuous growth. BBS is not a quick fix. It is a commitment.

BBS is therefore a methodology where positive reinforcement is used to change “unsafe behaviour” or “unsafe act” in the workplace. The unsafe behaviours are accessed and identified through hazard identification & risk assessment and review of incidents in consultation with the employee.
